| We
list out some of the advantages that an interactive whiteboard
can bring to the teaching of numeracy. Some of these advantages
may apply equally to using a data-projector with a computer.
However, many teachers say that being able
to control the software and carry out work at the interactive
whiteboard itself helps pupils to visualise and remember concepts,
processes and ideas. Some ideas are dependent on the type
of software being used.

# Able to pre-prepare charts, diagrams and
tasks to display on the board.
# Able to use colour. For example, lines
on graphs can be drawn in different colours, making it clearer
which line is which. Many other examples for almost every
topic could be added here. Bright colours and bold graphics
are particularly useful for children in the primary age range.
# Interactive Whiteboard software often contains
backgrounds which provide useful grids, graph paper or charts
for presenting mathematical ideas.
# Answers can be pre-prepared and hidden
in a variety of ways. Revealing the answers can be awarded
to a pupil as a 'prize'. It also saves time in writing up
answers at the end of a task.
# Some software allows certain actions to
be carried out on shapes: e.g. rotations, mirror, flip, enlargements
and reductions
# In some software, you can draw shapes and
lines accurately on a page. Check how many different shapes
are included in software. Some software allows allows shapes
to be filled. The shapes can be used as shapes (e.g. square,
circle) but can also be used creatively for other topics:
e.g. use the circle to start a pie chart or use a rectangle
to draw blocks on a bar chart.
# Being able to turn the page in your whiteboard
software means that you never run out of space. It also means
that lessons can be structured around a series of pages. This
saves having to prepare overhead slides.
# Some software for maths will give instant
results. This applies to both CD ROM software and some internet
pages. The instant feedback can be motivating for pupils.
# In most whiteboard software, items can
be selected and moved on screen. For example, in an equation,
numbers could be dragged from one side of the equation to
the other, across the equals sign. Shapes could be moved on
a graph. Anything that is on screen can be changed.
# Some software provides banks of resources
or tools for use in lessons (e.g. protractor, ruler, dice
which can be used on screen)
# Voting devices can be very useful for carrying
out multiple choice tests. If there is a clock available on
screen, tasks can be timed as well.
